JAM LOCATION: Tempe, AZ
Anderson's Traditional Acoustic Bluegrass Jam Sessions
Private Home of Howard & Susan Anderson (since 1983)
Every Wednesday Evening from 7 - 10 p.m. - Email for directions with map.

The jam sessions are democratic; everyone has an equal chance to perform. The musicians stand in a circle, we go around the circle giving everyone an equal turn to pick and sing a song of their choice, or play an instrumental of their choice. People continually learn new bluegrass song. During the jam sessions, musicians indicate who should play next through the use of body language. If the person selected shakes his head, indicating that he not comfortable with that tune, another person is selected. All people are encouraged to give it a try.

Traditional buegrass music is performed typically by singing a verse, a chorus and then an instrument break. The chorus is often sung in three or four part harmony. Each break is done by a different instrument, so each musician has his chance to shire.

The Anderson's hosted bluegrass jams in Virginia for six years before moving to Arizonia, where they started these regular weekly jams in August 1983 and have continued them ever since. They provide soft drinks, ice and cups.

"I attended my first jam at the Anderson's ten years ago as a brand-new mandolin player. I was encouraged and mentored by the people there and have remained a regular for all these years. I've observed many musicians to go on and establish or become part of performing bands. The level of playing is excellent yet there is always room for the novice. A friendly and welcoming atmosphere - never clickish and exclusive. They have set the pattern for traditional bluegrass and jammng for many of us in Arizona! Thanks!
