"
Though billed as an open jam, it appears to me to be cliquish and a
little inbred. The participants have been together for a long time, and
are not - in my experience - particulalrly welcoming. It's
relatively small, with probably about 6-10 people attending. Quality of
play is, I think, intermediate, with an abundance of guitars, sporadic
attendance of a bass player, one banjo player, a mandolin-player or
two, and a good fiddler "

"To
add to Don Rowan's comments, my experience is that this jam is very
open and welcoming. All levels of play are represented, with most being
at the beginning to intermediate level (in my opinion). Once in awhile,
an excellent picker will show up. The songs go around in a circle. The
soup is excellent, and the atmosphere relaxed. Attendance is variable."
"In
my experience, the jam does attract a few good pickers on an
intermediate basis; however, I would rate the overall quality of play
as beginning to intermediate. That said, it tends to be welcoming and
accepting of others. Players sit in a circle and take turns. Sometimes,
the jam gets too big for my liking (upwards of 15 people) that not
everyone can take a break, and the quality of play slackens. That's
only natural, though, if the group gets this large. The soup and donuts
are very good."

"I've
been to this jam once, it was noisy and filled with fun loving people.
Most of the customers talked and ate pizza, some listened to the
music. There is a small stage, a sound system with 3-4
microphones, couple of monitors, and stand-up speakers for the
audience. The participants were friendly enough and played a wide
variety of music, some bluegrass, country, and blues. There
were a couple of fiddles and mandolins, three to four guitars, a bass,
and three banjos. People took turns stepping up to the mics
for breaks. I had a good time. I was so noisy you couldn't hear
yourself playing, yet alone other musicians. I may go back;
the beer, pizza, and folks there make the whole experience
worthwhile. "

"Visiting from France, I had the joy and pleasure to visit the tuesday
Bluegrass Soup Jam of Signal Hill, great people, great soup, great
picking, what else is there to say".
Bernard
" The
players are friendly, and the venue is conducive to jamming. Attendance
varies between three and twenty. Lots of guitars, 3-4 mandolins, a
couple of bases, a couple of banjos. The soup and coffee are very good.
The drill seems to be everyone picks out a song, going around in a
circle. Quality of play is usually beginner to intermediate "

This
jam is a lot of fun! Usually the weather is nice so we play outdoors,
in the middle of an apricot orchard. If enough people show up, we split
up into several groups. Folks are very friendly and low key.
