"I don't know what other people's
experience has been at the Sunday
jams at Artz, but I would have to say that if you don't know people
that are in the 'in group' don't bother going. I have attended
weekly
jams in several states over the past thirty years but have never
encountered a less welcoming crowd. I am well acquainted with the
nuances of jam etiquette and the dynamics of fitting in. When I
arrived I was 'welcomed' by a few heads looking up from among the group
of 8=10 pickers with variants of the ''who the h______ are you' and
then they went back to pickin. In the fifteen minutes I was there
no
one spoke to me or welcomed me into the circle. In contrast,
during
that time 3 others (obviously known by the cliquish group) were
welcomed with smiles, outstretched hands and even getting up out of
seats. I have heard that the Austin scene can be very cliquish,
and my
experiences at the jam at Artz' certainly fit with the perception of
pickers from the outlying areas 1 to 2 hours from Austin. "

" This
is the BEST jam session in TEXAS. It draws between 400 & 600
people to play and listen at this little ghost town set way back in the
hills near Evant, Tx in the heart of the hill country. It is at
an old school house that has been renovated...added heat &
a/c. People jam in every room of the school house, in the halls,
outside under the pavillion and under any shade tree you can
find. Lots of good ol' time bluegrassw and gospel. All
acustic. Good home cooked food in the old school
cafeteria...great pies. Professionals and amateurs play
together. It is continuous music all day Saturday from about 9
a.m. until 10 p.m. If you want to go on stage, just see the guys
in charge"

| JAM
LOCATION: Wimberly, TX |
| Bluegrass Jam,At
The Rolling Oaks Clubhouse. |
| Fridays - 8:00 to
12 midnight |
Here is how to find
the new location (these directions are coming from the south on RR 12
toward Wimbrerley:
Turn off of FM 32 (or RR 12 if you are coming from IH35 -- the two
roads meet there)
Go north on RR12
Turn right at the first light (just before you actually get into the
town) on FM 3237
Go approximately 7 miles and turn left on Rolling Oaks Drive (also
Country Rd. ________ ? that is one of the signs, but is marked Rolling
Oaks Drive as well).
After about 1/2 mile turn left on Jennifer Lane (there is a small sign
noting that this is the way to the 'Rolling Oaks Club House")
Travel about 1 mile to make a right turn on Lonesome Trail
About 1/4 mile down Lonesome Trail on the right is the 'club' and the
pool - the building is nothing fancy
The jams are held
outside under one
of the large oak tress - sometimes between the pool and the clubhouse,
other times behind the clubhouse.

" We were there last Friday night
and no one showed up. We love listening to the players and would like
to know if they moved their location. "
"The jam sessions
still go on - though they are not strictly bluegrass. Its more of
an acoustic Ameriana jam. You will have everything from some
bluegrass, old-time, less commercial country, folk and such. The
only real rule is acoustic instruments only. Great group of
people and definitely not a 'big ego' bunch - everyone just wants to
make music and is accepting of all levels of abilities"
